Snacks to Eat When You're Bored

We've all been there to that place where you're on a diet, trying to eat healthy or to eliminate junk food, but then find yourself having zero food options when you're bored, anxious, or craving something you shouldn't eat. So because you failed to really think through solutions to your old habits, you slip back into stuffing cookies into your mouth.

To help you out, I'm giving you my list of snacks to eat when you're bored. If you want to add to this list please tell me in the comments below!   

*Keep a large cup of WATER with you to drink as you snack on the items below:

  • jicama (I like it sprinkled with lemon & salt)
  • cucumber (same as above, lemon & salt!)
  • apples (cut them into slices if you like)
  • celery
  • carrots
  • blueberries (for this I prefer them frozen, gives me something to play with in my mouth)
  • red grapes & wheat thins (this combo in my mouth tastes like cherry pie to me, try it! Don't eat too much though!)
  • frozen grapes
  • frozen cherries
  • flavorful chewing gum
  • baby tomatoes or a whole tomato (with salt if you prefer)
  • edamame 
  • citrus fruit: grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons
  • cabbage leaves (not exactly the tastiest, but they are crunchy!)
  • Sandwich bags with 1 serving of a nutritious cereal (like Total, SmartStart, etc).

 

 

However if you're teetering on the line of hungry then here are some more hearty snacks you might want to consider:

  • boiled eggs (I like to add a squirt of dijon mustard & pepper to make it taste like deviled eggs)
  • veggies with hummus 
  • toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk
  • celery or banana with peanut butter & a cup of non-fat milk
  • any large fruits: bananas, pears, apples etc. 
  • high-protein or greek yogurt
  • a cup of low-fat chocolate milk
  • green smoothie or a low-calorie protein shake
  • cottage cheese with fruit

As a rule of thumb you want to try and stay away from any starchy or high carb foods like cereal or bread for your snack because these will really heighten your craving making it worse than it was before. Also if you snack on any type of nuts just beware that a small handful of nuts can pack a CrAzY amount of calories, so snack wisely!!
